The three Major Writing Assignments that I did were "A Toast to Vogue with Barbeque and Burgers", "Frankenstein's Monster: A Victim not a Killer", and "JFK Assassination: A Communist Conspiracy". I evaluated an argument in the first paper, built an argument in the second, and built an argument with evidence in the third.
The first paper allowed me to explore another author's argumentative tecniques, which helped me develop my own. In the second paper, I found a way to portray my own ideas in an organized manner and then argue for them. The third assignment helped me to significantly strengthen my reasearch skills.
I believe "A Toast to Vogue with Barbeque and Burgers" was my strongest piece. I felt the most comfortable evaluating another author's argument because that was what I did for the majority of my high school papers. however, I struggled a little bit with the MLA citation because I hadn't had too much previous experience with it. It strengthened me as a writer because I learned how to properly cite my sources. Overall, however, I am happy with this piece as it introduced me to the other two assignments.
I think I struggled the most on the second writing assignment. I had trouble arguing for something without concrete evidence; most of my evidence seemed subjective. However, I learned how to cite many different kinds of sources, and I learned the correct strategy for arguing. By using the "so what" factor and "as we have seen" statements, I am better able to conclude my arguments. It was also great practice for presenting before a group, as that is something that I have always struggled with.
I really enjoyed the third writing assignment because it was about something that was truly mysterious and interesting. I learned how to use the library database and how to find several sources of information. This gave me a lot of evidence to use to build an argument. Through many of my sources, I was also able to explore other author's argument tecniques. I struggled with meeting the page requirement at first, but by developing my introduction and conclusion, my paper became more developed as a whole.
The writing in my portfolio shows how passionate I am about community health. I have struggled personally with an eating disorder, and it felt meaningful to me to portray the injustice of society's unrealistic expectations of women. I have definitely improved in my ability to form an argument, research the library database, and use proper MLA citation. Also, I have learned how to blog and use social media to display my arguments. Having these skills will prepare me to write future college papers, and will help me with writing to future employers.
